Sevres entree plate 1805-1806
A plate from the “starter and dessert” service, pale blue background with gold swans highlighted in brown for the princesse Borghèse.
This plate comes from an entree and dessert service give by Empress Josephine to Napoleon’s sister Pauline Borghese in 1805.
Description
From a service belonging to Princess Borghese. With gold decoration in the center of a hexagonal pattern embellished with palms. A pale blue border with three reserves presenting a couple of swans drinking in a miniature fountain coming out of a vase. They are on a green background in a rectangular cartridge with gold net. On either side of a rhombus with gold net and gold coil, a crowned female figure. On each side a red flower with foliage. Two rows of purple pearls connect the reserves. Gold fillets on the edges and on the reverse of the plate.

History & Context
This service was bought on 15 Brumaire year 14 (6 November 1805) by order of the Empress Josephine and delivered to Her Imperial Highness the Princess Borghese, Pauline Bonaparte sister of the Emperor (Vy17, fol 5 v °). The service includes an entre service and a dessert service. It includes: 102 plates, 4 butter dishes, 4 boats, 4 salad bowls, 16 cream jars, 2 trays, 72 plates, 20 fruit bowls, 2 sugar bowls, 2 iceboxes shaped tripod, 2 vase-shaped coolers, 4 bowls, 2 baskets snake and 4 jasmine baskets, for a total sum of 16,090 francs. The supplement consisting of "48 flat plates, 24 cups, 1 jug of milk, 1 jar of cream and 2 tureens and dishes" is delivered on September 29, 1806 (Vbb2, fol 59 and Vy17, fol 26)
