Sevres cup, saucer & sugar bowl 1809

Description

A rare covered sugar bowl and cup with saucer from the Sèvres cabaret “fond vert, guirlande de fleurs” service made in 1809 and purchased by Empress Josephine in March 1809. Used by her at the Elysee Palace and later taken to Malmaison.

Sèvres Gobelet litron and its saucer of the cabaret green background garlands of flowers ‹ Empress Josephine, in hard porcelain, of the fourth size, decorated: garlands of flowers on a gold background and palmettes, herringbones and gold trellis on chrome green fon. Provenance: Cabaret "green background, garland of flowers, rich gilding", entered the sales store on August 23, 1809 (Arch. MNC, Sèvres, Vu1, fol. 81 v°) then bought by Empress Josephine on March 8, 1810 (Vy19 fol. 3 e Vz1, fol. 273). It was composed in particular of 12 cups and saucers of 4th size, for a total cost of 858 francs. History: It was delivered at the same time as a dessert service, with a very close decor, to the Elysée Palace, which Napoleon had made available to his former wife after the divorce.

When in 1812 Napoleon recovered the palace, the service passed to Malmaison, where Josephine lived until her death in 1814. Bibliography: The eagle and the butterfly, symbols of powers under Napoleon, Les Arts Décoratifs, Paris, 2007, cat. 2'
