History & Context

A finely bound volume bearing an elaborate gilt imperial coat of arms centerpiece to both covers, containing Volume X of the second edition of the Précis de l’Histoire Universelle by Louis-Pierre Anquetil, published in Paris in Year X (1801–1802). Printed by Lesguilliez frères, the work presents a concise universal history tracing the rise, grandeur, decline, and catastrophes of nations from antiquity to the modern era. The handsome mottled calf binding is richly tooled in gilt with decorative borders and an armorial-style Napoleonic eagle device surmounted by a crown and military trophies, reflecting the emerging visual language of the Consulate and early Empire.
Bearing library stamps for Compiegne and Grand Trianon.
