History & Context
After divorcing Josephine in December 1809, Napoleon married Marie Louise of Austria, the eldest daughter of Emperor Francis I. These medals were struck to commemorate the civil marriage of Napoleon I and Marie Louise on April 1, 1810. They were issued in different modules and in different metals: gold, silver and even platinum. The larger ones were given to the great dignitaries who attended the ceremony, while the smaller ones were thrown to the people during the celebrations.
