A rare Imperial library volume from the private cabinet of Napoleon I, bound in contemporary gilt calf with the crowned Imperial arms of the Emperor and bearing the red stamp of the “Cabinet de S.M. l’Empereur”.

Published in Paris in 1809, M. de Flassan’s Histoire générale et raisonnée de la diplomatie française book traces the development of French diplomacy from the foundation of the monarchy to the end of the reign of Louis XVI. The work examines France’s principal diplomatic relationships, negotiations and foreign-policy decisions, and includes chronological tables recording treaties concluded by France. Published by Lenormant and printed by Giguet et Michaud, it provides an important early nineteenth-century survey of French diplomatic history and the political traditions inherited by Napoleonic France.
