History & Context
A porcelain dessert plate made by the Fürstenberg manufacture for Jérôme Napoléon, King of Westphalia. The white porcelain is decorated with scattered naturalistic flower sprays in polychrome enamels and bordered with gilding, while the upper rim bears Jérôme’s floral “J N” cipher beneath a wreath. The restrained decoration is characteristic of the elegant table services produced for the Westphalian court during the Napoleonic period. Founded in 1747, Fürstenberg was one of the principal German porcelain manufactories and supplied objects of considerable refinement to royal and aristocratic patrons. This plate survives as a particularly personal reminder of Jérôme’s brief but richly furnished court at Kassel.
