Dinner plate from the Prince Vorontsov service.
Hard-paste porcelain, ornate at the center with symbols of love in sepia color, surrounded by a gilt laurel leaf crown, the border is alternately decorated with sphinxes, foliages and lyres in gold on a pink ground, bordered with gilt rim.

Description
The centre painted in sepia with an allegorical trophy, probably representing Love and Fidelity, comprising a flaming altar, a dog, the apparent bow and quiver of Cupid, a wreath, drapery and foliage. Purchased by Prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov c.1814 and later placed in his summer residence at Aloupka (Crimea), the famous Vorontsov Palace, built between 1830 and 1848 and owned by the Vorontsov family until the Revolution. The palace museum currently holds a pair of bottle buckets and a pair of ice buckets from this service, where each piece presents a different trophy. They may own other pieces from this service, but not exhibited.

History & Context
The service is associated with Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov (1782–1856), one of the most important Russian commanders and administrators of his generation. He fought against Napoleon at Friedland, Borodino, Leipzig and Craonne and was subsequently commander of the Russian occupation corps in France from 1815 to 1818. The official Vorontsov Palace biography confirms that career and records his later appointment as Governor-General of New Russia and Bessarabia.
