From the Tuileries palace, an empire candlestick in the form of a classically draped woman holding a wreath and surmounted by an Ionic capital and a circular nozzle cast with anthemion, the drip pan hung with tassels.
Description
The candle stick has stamped mark ‘THUIL’ around the foot and various numbers for inventories for the Tuileries Palace.
History & Context
An empire candlestick in the form of a classically draped woman holding a wreath and surmounted by an Ionic capital and a circular nozzle cast with anthemion, the drip pan hung with tassels. The figure stands on a cylindrical plinth with applied female mask on a circular spreading foot cast with anthemion and foliage. The side of the foot/base is stamped with 'THUIL 295' (over stamped with three 0's) and 738, inventory marks for the Tuileries Palace. It is highly likely this candlestick comes from the Imperial Apartments within the Tuileries Palace. The chateau of Fontainebleau holds a similar candlestick in its collection.
